Traveling Cirkus looking for venues to play at pre-BRC

Cirkus Pandemonium is a traveling cirkus troupe that embraces the new-wave small top cirkus movement. We have been touring since 2005, and have been developing a show that combines acrobalance, aerial silk, unicycling, juggling, burlesque, and sideshow acts with a theatrical world of goblins and faeries. We will be in Reno, Nevada from the second week of August through the beginning of the Burning Man festival, and are interested in finding venues to perform in while we're in town. If you have a favorite bar or club that features live acts who you think we would be well suited to, please send me a message with the information. If there is an interest, we would also be willing to set up workshops to teach aerial and acrobalance skills. Thank you for your help in bringing our unique and impressive show to Reno.

all together now..

All together now! –––"Are we not men? We are Nada!"

My number one desire is to make a comfy living from the sale of my art. I made these paintings, but I don't wanna keep them. It'd be nice to make a living from doing the thing I'm best at.
I found out years ago that in order to do this, I must involve others in what I'm doing; inevitably, I concluded, they will involve me in what they're doing too. This is what happened in January of '07 as Jeff Johnson, Tova Ramos, Dianna SionCallender, Esther Triggs and Ann O'Lear invited me to join them in the Dada Motel schemes. The thing quickly took off but we've had to work at it and many more people have joined in, helping in their own ways. It's an artist thing and that means nothing in particular, so we're searching to find out what we've got here, who we've got here.
We've got 50 motel rooms filled so far, and it's in Reno; that much we know.
There's this large unique local community of creative types here and our groups compliment each other. If each group focuses its efforts to reinforcing what the other groups are doing/making, we will be able to shout with one loud voice. We're making some noise and calling some attention to our own efforts. This is done better when it's not just us saying "hey look at us", this goes for groups of artists and individual artists alike. We do our part to promote each other and everybody's happy.
I'm lookin' for unity, I'm lookin' for creativity, and mostly I just want everyone to know that this event was wholly created by artists. The artists worked together to bring you this and here we are–luvv us.
We artists types are notoriously known to be loner individuals and iconoclasts. That's o.k. It's just that all of these grunting individualists need to realize the importance of applying our own creativity to promotional efforts. Maybe this is what being an artist is– a lot of grunting and calling attention to ourselves. Whatever works. We gotta' have an audience!
Arts education/appreciation drops at alarming rates in public institutions and the funding dwindles that supports these efforts. You and I both know that art is more than drawing, drumming or crying on cue. Art is in the lives that we lead everyday but not everyone has been so fortunate, they don't understand the benefits. The creative life–itself–is an art compared to the life that most live. We must share our talents/fears/observations/obsessions and bring these 'others' in to our world.
Too many people are waiting for something to happen and are meanwhile making nothing happen. I like to do things the hard way myself, and it's always given me good practice for the easy stuff.
Nada Motel asks a lot from participants as did Dada Motel and that's how it works so well and efficiently.
A fact of life is that 'nothing succeeds without personal sacrifice' and isn't that how it SHOULD be? We do more than is asked of us, and it doesn't go unnoticed–but results are not instant. GIVING is what art does; eventually it has to given back to.
A question to ask our selves is "Why include anyone else in my plans to achieve artistic fame?" And a second question would be "As an artist, do I need fame?"
As we all know, art is not made in a vacuum, successful art involves many people; many people to promote and many people to appreciate. The beautiful thing is that the promoters and the appreciators are the same people, and so it grows.
Finally, as artists, all that we need to know is that people need to see what we make/do.... and there's no better time to show them than NOW!
Hit the press, tell them what's brewin'–make noise, period. Reno is loud, Reno is proud and you don't wanna be left behind!

All together now!

or near Reno....a half hour drive is do-able.
I just moved, so I don't know anyone
and
I need to see someone ASAP, preferably a female doctor.
Planned Parenthood doesn't accept my insurance, and the procedure I need done is costly.

Guys ask the women in your life if they have a super-fabulous girl bits doc

I know I can call the hospital for a recommendation, but the doc.
I went to on recommendation made me EXTREMELY uncomfortable.
I'm debating whether or not to report him.

Thanks

Shutter Fire! Photography in Fire Arts Opening TONIGHT 6pm Dreamer's Coffee House, Reno

Controlled Burn invites you to view the hottest art show in Reno. Introducing "Shutter Fire: Photography in Fire Arts", to be held from June 5-July 31st at Dreamers Coffee House (17 S Virginia St) in downtown Reno. In support of Reno's Inaugural Fire Arts Festival to be held July 19, view amazing art by local and regional photographers who have captured amazing and sometimes frightening interplay of humans interacting with fire. Inspired by Controlled Burn's invitation to judge this year's Fire Arts Photography contest held by Trick Concepts, a California-based company specializing in fire art fabrication and specialization, this amazing display of fire features some of the winners of this year's contest as well as honorable mentions. Local artists including Bill Kozitsky, Michael Herzog, Pat Herz, Saverio Cine, Geoffrey Nelson and Shone Jensen will also be featured with special guest Abjectphoto from New York. Dreamer's Coffee House is known for their support of local and regional artists, and we are very excited to collaborate with them on this project. This incredible show is sponsored by Great Basin Color and Conservation. Prints range from the abstract to the sublime.

FREE to attend this event, and wine and light snacks will be served. We will be burning around 8pm.

Please come!

Robert McQueen High School Reunion Class of 1998

June 20 and 21

If you would like to get more details reguarding the class reunion please email: mcqueengrad98@gmail.com

Here is a copy of the annoucement so far:

It's official - the reunion will be held Friday, June 20 -Saturday June 21, so please help spread the word!
Jake Zucker and I are trying to coordinate it, but we want everyone involved.
This is for all of us, so we want to make sure we incorporate everyone's
"vision" and expectations. But with that said, we don't have a lot of time, so we need to start nailing down plans.

These are our ideas:

Friday, June 20 - Drinks and appetizers at an upscale place.
We have some calls in to some places. We are looking to make this a nice event. Nice dress code, cocktails, wine, beer, appetizers, etc.

(Ideas??) (i.e. Siena, Bistro 7 (formally Ciao), Red Rock (has anyone been here? I hear it's a cool trendy new place d.t.)

Saturday, June 21 - We are throwing around the idea of having a beach day at Tahoe (Zephyr Cove). We called around town and all local parks are booked. Zephyr Cove folks said we are welcome to congregate there. We could bbq, BYOB type of deal, etc. Only possible issue with this is drinking and driving back to town for dinner.

THOUGHTS??

Saturday Evening, June 21 - Catered dinner at Great Basin.

These guys are willing to rent out the entire patio to us for free. They will cater our dinner which will be about $23 a person (I have the menu - it looks pretty yummy). A band is already booked that night for the patio - so we have free entertainment. I made a reservation here for 6pm, but if you guys don't like this idea, I can cancel and look for something else.

Nada Motel cometh...

It has come time for the Nadaists to end the era of herding artists for participation in our event–we have 30 motel rooms filled at this moment, some have multiple artists exhibiting. Though, if you ARE an artists of some kind, and would like to exhibit, it's not too late. Go here: http://tribes.tribe.net/nadamotel

But I'm here right now to tell the general public–the audience, if you will–about this funktastical event. It's true, last year the event was called Dada Motel, named after the anti-artist anarchists of the famous international art movement which started between World Wars–and why is that capitalized?

It's a great name, I know, we had a brand to promote, I know, we even have some attitudinal similarities to the Dadaists, but ya' know, why be normal? Does anyone really need another antiseptic art festival with slushies and balloon twisters on street corners, hand-painted ties and caricature artists, people with happy pins to sell you and bumperstickers that say "support the arts"? Is art a charity? Is it only that? Should we poor artists be asking you for money because art is so frickin' important?

I say no. Art is an action, art is not a charity, art is in your face and it's not all pretty, not all happy, and it doesn't go with your sofa. Art lives and breathes and takes many forms, but it IS for everyone, even the hand-painted tie lovers, but it's also for the fire loving furry people with face paint and smoke rings, toe rings and ringtones, hoola-hoops and nipple rings and ring tones, ton-loc and T Lo, J Lo, G Lo and below, because folks, I don't even know what to tell you to expect. Just come. June 26th thru 29th, Hotel El Cortez and Town House Motorlodge. Noon to Midnight (individual room times may vary)

Oh yeah, FREE.

Again, here's our site. Go there, ask questions, make fun of the kid with big ears:

We already have fire performance, a glass blower, and a couple of sculpture artists displaying, but we have room for more! For more details, please send me a private message or email gemini (at) controlledburnereno (dot) com.

Thanks and hope to hear from you!

...any real, part-time, work from home opportunities in the Reno area? I just need to make a couple hundred more bucks a month - not looking for any get-rich-quick crap, just some honest work. My wife and I have two small children, and we're busy quite often with this or that. I've got a steady 8-5 job at UNR that I love, and my wife works one main, part-time job, then is a group fitness instructor about town (plus a few other things). So another part-time job for her or any part-time job away-from-home for me wouldn't work too well.

My grandparents, way back in the day, used to assemble coax cables at home, for some darn company up in the Northwest (as in Washington State), so I know there are legitimate things out there (or there USED to be) - but telling the legit stuff from the scams on some frick'n website is hard work.

I'm a pretty handy, detail oriented guy, so assembly from home would work well for me. I'm also fairly savvy around a keyboard, but I work on one most of the day, so I'd rather do something else with my hands than key in some data.

Anyway, if anyone knows of anything, please respond to this post.

Thank you very muchly...just joel...

this from Michael Albright, Project Moonshine director:

Hello,

Just sending a friendly reminder to let everyone know that our Dada Motel doc will be playing at the Reno Film Festival on Sunday May 4th at 11:30 AM. Prior to the screening there will be a live, Dada performance by Brad Bynum and some other awesome musicians from around town. Basically, a noise improv of sorts...similar to their performance at the Trocadero Room last summer. So they'll play and do their thing...and then our film will screen.

Plastic bag ban - call your council person, tell your neighbor, go to the meeting!!!!

Green Team:

At the February 13 council meeting, the mayor asked that the issue of banning plastic bags be placed on an upcoming agenda. It was Item L.9 on the February 27 agenda and was continued to the March 5 agenda.

Attached is a summary of information regarding bans that I have prepared. This is for your information.
STAFF REPORT

To: Mayor and City Council Date: 3-5-2008

Thru: Charles McNeely, City Manager

Subject:
Staff Report: Plastic Bag Bans.

From: Jason Geddes, Environmental Services Administrator

Summary: The Council approved the Green Priority Action Plan for FY 07-08 in May 2007. The plan outlines nine objectives and thirty-nine action items that will help the City achieve the goal of the priority which is to “Enhance the City’s efforts to reduce its impact on the environment and provide leadership in the community to encourage residents and businesses to join in this effort.” At the February 13, 2008 council meeting, the Mayor requested that we research what other municipalities were doing in regards to banning plastic bags at stores.

Previous Council Action: 5-24-2007: Council approved the Green Priority Action Plan

Background:

Plastic bags statistics
•	2 to 3 cents - Amount each bag costs markets, compared to 5 to 10 cents for a biodegradable bag.
•	4 trillion to 5 trillion - Number of non-degradable plastic bags used worldwide annually.
•	430,000 gallons - Amount of oil needed to produce 100 million non-degradable plastic bags.

Governments:

Summary - There has been 1- ban, 2 approved bans that are in court, 2 cities that require bag recycling, and 2 cities that are studying the issue. In addition, there are 4 countries that have approved bans and 2 that have imposed taxes on bags.

San Francisco, CA – In March 2007, San Francisco became the first city to ban plastic bags. Under the policy, large markets and pharmacies will have the option of using compostable bags made of corn starch or bags made of recyclable paper.
New York, New York - New York City approved a bill in January of 2008, that forces large retailers to set up plastic bag recycling. The measure aims to reduce the number of bags handed out to city consumers from an estimated 1 billion a year. The bill requires all stores that occupy at least 5,000 square feet to implement bag recycling programs as well as make recycled bags available. The cost to business would be minimal since recycling firms currently pay $100 a ton for plastic bags.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Proposed a ban on plastic bags and take-out polystyrene
containers, but failed to garner much committee support. The bill was amended to work on incentives for plastics recycling.
Fairfax, California - The City of Fairfax approved a plastic bag ban in 2007. They were sued by The Coalition to Support Plastic Bag Recycling, a group of plastic bag manufacturers and recyclers based in Sacramento. City officials there decided fighting the industry would be too costly and made the ordinance voluntary.

Santa Monica, California - The Santa Monica City Council delayed action late Tuesday (2/19) on the drafting of an ordinance that would ban 'single-use' plastic carry-out bags at all stores and restaurants within the city, and would require retailers to charge a fee for paper bags." The ordinance "is aimed at accelerating a shift away from highly polluting plastic bags in favor of reusable canvas and other bags." Earlier in the "month, a ban on the use of non-recyclable packaging for takeout food and beverages took effect in Santa Monica." Currently, "Californians carry home an estimated 19 billion lightweight plastic bags each year, with about six billion of those used in Los Angeles County.”
Oakland, California - Oakland city leaders have banned oil-based plastic bags from use at retail outlets that gross more than $1 million a year. Oakland's ordinance was scheduled to go into force in January, 2008 but has been held up because of the Coalition to Support Platic Bag Recycling's court challenge. The Coalition sued Oakland as a maneuver to try stop the spread of laws banning plastic bags after Oakland patterned its law after one enacted in San Francisco in 2007.

Annapolis, Maryland – A ban was proposed in June 2007. Council took action in November 2007 by amending the proposal to suggest further studies by an environmental review committee as well as using recyclable and reusable products rather than imposing a ban.

Los Angeles, California – In January 2008, Los Angeles County approved a policy asks retailers to encourage consumers to use reusable shopping bags in unincorporated parts of the county.

Countries:

China – January, 2008 - China banned free plastic bags and ordered customers to be charged for any they use. The rules, which take effect June 1, come as the country tries to tackle a significant source of litter. The bags also are banned from all public transportation, including buses, trains and planes and from airports and scenic locations. Companies caught breaking the new rules face fines and possible forfeiture of goods. Shops have been instructed to mark the price of the plastic bags clearly and not fold them into the cost of other items. The Chinese use up to 3 billion plastic shopping bags a day. More durable plastic bags still will be allowed for sale by markets and shops.

Australia – In July of 2006, the State of Victoria passed a law requiring a 10 cent levy on all plastic bags.

Ireland – In 2002, Ireland imposed a tax of 33 cents per plastic bag at the register leading to a 94% drop in their use.

Other Countries with bans – Uganda, South Africa, Bangladesh (2004),

Private Companies:

IKEA stores - March 15, 2007 all IKEA stores in the US will charge a nickel per plastic bag. Proceeds of up to $1.75 million from the bag campaign will go to American Forests to plant trees to restore forests and offset CO2 emissions. IKEA will be selling its reusable 'Big Blue Bag'. IKEA projects that the number of plastic bags used by their U.S. customers will be reduced by at least 50% from 70 million to 35 million in the first year. This program was launched in IKEA stores in the UK in late Spring 2006, and reduction has been an impressive 95 percent.

Whole Foods – In December 2007, Whole Foods Market announced it is no longer offering plastic grocery bags at the checkouts in its two stores in Austin, Texas. The move in Austin, where the supermarket is headquartered, is the first step to ban plastic bags companywide by early 2008. Paper bags made for Whole Foods from 100 percent recycled content will continue to be an option for shoppers. At the Austin stores, the Company is also increasing the refund from five cents to ten cents per bag to shoppers who bring their own bags to use at the checkouts. Whole Foods is now selling “A Better Bag,” a reusable bag made from 80 percent post-consumer recycled plastic bottles.
Raley’s stores in the area offer a re-usable bag and provide consumers with a 5 cent per bag discount for using their own bags.
Opposition to Bans

The Progressive Bag Alliance (PBA) was founded in 2005 and is a group of American plastic bag manufacturers who advocate recycling plastic shopping bags as an alternative to banning the bags.
The Coalition to Support Plastic Bag Recycling is a group of plastic grocery bag manufacturers and recyclers based in Sacramento, California that is suing the City of Oakland, California in court over the city's ban on plastic grocery bags. The Coalition also sued the city of Fairfax, California, located just north of San Francisco in Marin County, in 2007 over its ban on plastic bags. Fairfax has made compliance with the ordinance voluntary to avoid the Coalition's lawsuit.

Hi- I'm looking for a pet friendly house to rent in the Reno area starting in April. I'm looking for either a 6 month lease, or month-to-month. I can afford a rent of $1000/month or less. I've called a few places on Craig’s List with no luck. My boyfriend and I are responsible professionals with full time jobs. We are seriously looking and need to find a place ASAP. I know apartments are available, but I would prefer to rent a house with a yard since I have a dog and a cat.
If you know of anyone looking to rent their place, please contact me.
Thanks,

Do you ever wonder how your City government works? Who your City Council Member is? How City Hall decides which streets to repair?

The Reno Citizens Institute (RCI) may be the answer to all your questions. RCI is a 10-week in-depth course on your local government. The class meets on Thursday evenings from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. This free course takes an investment of time, but the payoff is a comprehensive understanding of your city government. Participants meet each department head, elected officials and professionals in their field. You will learn about everything from the Reno Fire Department's Community Risk Reduction program to the City Attorney's Domestic Violence Unit.

RCI sessions are limited to 30 participants. The courses are hands-on and many classes have facility tours. Learn how your public officials make decisions, how funds are allocated, and how the departments work together to make your city great. The Spring 2008 Session begins April 10, 2008, so please sign-up today. RCI is a fun program for newcomers and existing residents!

Participants who attend at least 6 of the 10 classes will be presented with certificates of graduation at a Reno City Council meeting. For more information on the next RCI session, email Michael Chaump at chaumpm@cityofreno.com or call 775-785-5858.

My Girl Scout Co-leader has gotten herself a virus and doesn't know where to go for help. What she described to me is beyond my capabilities. I can't recommend any folks locally because I have never had reason to need that kind of assistance (knock on wood). Can anyone recommend an competent and reasonably priced computer geek that can help her clean up her 'puter?

Washoe county fascism

I must admit I thought Katy was straight up wrong when she told me that Washoe County is turning down federal Title X money in order to stop providing family planning and the Team Mall program. I mean really why would the county stop providing services? Have the neonazisrightwingnutjobs really got that much sway? Holy cow, yes they do. And the meeting to nix it all is at the end of the month, and public input by Email ends on the 15th.

Here's the info:

Family Planning is under attack in Washoe County and we need your help.
The Washoe County Board of County Commissioners and the Washoe County Board of Health have scheduled meetings to discuss the possibility of no longer accepting the Title X federal grant, which is America's family planning program for low-income women. The County is threatening to stop accepting $730,000 supporting women's health care. This means the county will no longer provide family planning services or the Teen Health Mall program.

Send an email to rlencioni@washoecounty.us to tell the County Commissioners to keep the Title X funding to Protect Women's Health.

Family planning prevents unplanned pregnancies; exams assure at-risk women are screened for breast and cervical cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. Preventing unplanned pregnancies saves Nevada taxpayers - every dollar spent saves $4 in Medicaid costs for pregnancy and newborn health care.

Take action now! One minute of your time will make a big difference - please write an email to the County Commissioners
(email: rlencioni@washoecounty.us) by this Friday (2/15).
Emails sent to that address by Friday will go into packets that the Commissioners and Board will get before the meeting.

Other ways you can take action:
Call the County Commissioner's office at (775) 328-2005 to voice your opinion.
Go to the meetings: Commission 2/26 and Board of Health 2/28, both at 1pm, both at the Commissioners Chambers in Bldg A, 1009 E Ninth St, Reno NV 89502.

Sample Email to copy and paste to make it that much easier to send to <b>rlencioni@washoecounty.us.</b>

Dear Commissioner:

I am writing to request that you keep Title X funding to protect women's health and maintain the family planning services that are currently available in Washoe. Far from reducing services, I also request that you continue to look for ways to increase services for this important aspect of our community's health.

Nevada has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancy in the country. I am upset that the commissioners would even consider reducing the critical services that actually help teens make healthy choices for their own bodies and futures.
NAB meetings are once a month and are your # best access point to getting the inside scoop about what effects you on your block, and in the city/county/state as a whole. And trust me, there is at least one busy body on any topic that keeps the council members on their toes... if you are interested at all in what is happening around you... this is the place to go.
If you don't know which "ward" you live in go here: http://maps.cityofreno.net/myneighborhoodframe.htm and type in your address. You will get info about your immediate surroundings than you probably ever wanted to know. It also gives contact names and numbers for gov officials directly responsible to you.

My armchair CSI opinion is that he's in his early 30's, going through a divorce and has part time custody of his children (one who's young enough to potentially need a child seat).

I grow up in Reno<21 years>, and at times I miss it. I miss the recreation. You can walk anywhere, and end up somewhere else.

Reno is a place to peep back to once in a while.
I live in Santa Cruz now, the art is a little more open, and people are nice here.

The whole time I lived in Reno, I would go to the controlled burns, and meet up at Tom's house, different vibe I quess.

But if any one is coming to the bay, we can have coffee, - I live in the redwoods now -
and I am going to become a squirrel when I die.

I'm sure just about everyone has an opinion about who they think is the best in town. I'm looking for someone who is particularly good with birds. I had a tribal style phoenix done on my shoulder some years back and I want it cover it up with a real phoenix. Mine just looks to ugly to me anymore. When I had it done the tattoo artist non-chalontly says, "I hate tattoos on girls." "So why are you doing mine?" "Cuz yer paying me." Nice.

My name's Jonathan.

I am in reno for work and i want to plug in to
would set myself up with invitations to local
potlucks or circles, bodywork or coaching
trades, or just opportunities to meet someone
whom i can sit and have some tea with and get to
know a bit.

Would you consider helping me out? I would love
any suggestions, introductions, offers for
trades, invitations to tea or a hike, or
opportunities to be in service.

Thanks for considering it. Please use my email

The leaves are changing, there a clean crisp nip in the air. That means it is Fall Cleaning Time. Yea! During the cleaning process many of us find things that we don’t need anymore but doesn’t belong in a landfill. We can try Freecycle, but it if it is really broken, no one else wants it, so we don’t know what to do with it. One of the biggest problems is trying to environmentally dispose of old computer products. I received this the other day and thought I would pass it on for those of you who have old computer products taking up space and need to find someone to take them off your hands.
Water & Fire Performance

Just when you thought Controlled Burn was done until Burning Man, we are back once more to dazzle you, only this time, poolside.

Yep...Nikki Beach heard about Controlled Burn and said, "We MUST have you!!" Of course we accepted cuz we can't resist showing off what we do best...play with fire!

So take a late night break this Saturday night, August 18 and head over to the Grand Sierra Resort's Nikki Beach. We start performing at 11 PM and will continue sets throughout the night until 2 AM.

Plus, Dragonfly Aerials, featuring Ms. Chelsea, has a most special surprise in store. I guarantee you haven't seen this done before!

And of course, what's a Controlled Burn performance without DJ Johnno spinning the tunes. We love you, Johnno!!!

The only bad news is that this particular party is $20.00 at the door. It'll be worth it, I swear on a stack of Burning Man tickets.

Recap:
Controlled Burn & Dragonfly Aerials at Nikki Beach
Saturday, August 18
11 PM to 2 PM
$20.00 at the door

Come play with us poolside. See you cats there!

My source has dryed up. Half way through my BM installation build and my source has dryed up. I am looking for used automotive exhaust pipe. Any size will do. ALOT is needed, but will take even one piece. Does anyone know of a muffler or mechanic shop source? Used exhaust is typically not recycled nor sold for scrap. Therefore shops just throw it into their dumpsters. I'm hitting what places I can find. A directly refered and willing source is much easier and less time consuming. Closer to Sparks the better. Anywhere in the Reno area will do. Rely or email me.
THX,
Jeff

Wedding reception site?

Hi everyone.

I'm scouring my brain for creative (and budget-friendly) ideas for wedding reception sites in Reno. I used to be local, but moved away a year or two ago. The wedding will be in December, so I'll be battling holiday parties and whatnot, so I need to get a move on.

Does anyone have any ideas?

This wedding will be _far_ from traditional, and done on the cheap, so I don't think anything's too strange. I'd like it within Reno proper (not up Mt Rose or up towards Stead, just in case the weather turns bad), and should hold 25-50 people. We haven't yet decided if we're going to have it catered, or do the food ourselves. I don't -think- we're doing a full dinner, but if the place has delish food at a rockin' price, we'll consider it.

Help! :)

Thanks.

By my gas guzzling Ramcharger so I can finance a biodiesel plant.

I need $2500 to finance a biodiesel plant, it can be up and running in less than 1 month.

I have agreements on supplies, I have storage and I have everything in place, except the plant it self.

So to finance this, I am selling my offroad toy.

The Burning Man Film Festival returns to Reno for its second year !
Like last year, the film festival will be showing at the lovely River School. Here is a link to on how to get there:

www.riverschool.info/how_to_...re.html.

The film fest webpage is almost ready, so please stand by for the link. Until then, here is all the info:

There are several more films added to the set of movies (16 in total), and we repeat several of them so as to be accomodative as possible for everyone's schedules. (Schedule and movie summaries are included below).

contact@riverschool.info.
We will be serving (at fairly reasonable prices) organic popcorn, organic chocolate, and fine wine for your additional pleasure ~

Kids under age 13 are admitted for free.

Black Rock Arts Foundation: The mission of the Black Rock Arts Foundation is to support and promote community-based interactive art. For our purposes, interactive art means art that generates social participation. The process whereby this art is created, the means by which it is displayed, and the character of the work itself should inspire immediate interactions that connect people to one another in a larger communal context. www.blackrockarts.org/

Movie Summaries:

Beyond Black Rock (2002) 1:46
By Mike Wilson & Damon Brown
This first-ever authorized documentary goes behind the scenes for an authentic peek at the inner workings of Burning Man - from the inside out. Beyond Black Rock explores the philosophy that fuels this unique social revolution, and the tireless organizers, artists and participants who create and nurture a worldwide cultural force. Features artists David Best, Bob “Wizzard” Marziewski, and Rafael Santiago, as well as many great theme camps and performers and Burning Man’s staff and volunteers.

Dust Devils (2003) 1:14
By Dearbhla Glynn & Aprile Blake
Capturing three consecutive years of Burning Man from 2001-2003, this documentary by this two-woman Irish team captures the swirling columns of dust that were created during the intense heat of the 2002 Temple burn. Including many interviews, it illustrates the colorful energy and activity of the Center Cafe and offers extensive coverage of artist David Best and the raising then burning of the Temple.

Burning Man 1994 (1994) 1:14
One of the first full-length documentaries of the event, Cirino captures Burning Man when the population was 2,000, when driving across the playa was commonplace, and when the Man was lit by Crimson Rose and Will Roger. An early glimpse at Burning Man’s history.

Burning Man 1997 (1997) 1:17
By Chuck Cirino
Skillful editing is combined with great music to capture the excitement and chaos of Burning Man 1997. The video begins with a 5-minute history, using black & white video from early years at Baker Beach and Black Rock, along with the voice of Burning Man’s Director Larry Harvey in the background. This story takes us into the colorful and controversial issues with local authority during Burning Man ’97 and also takes a humorous jab at the circus of video cameras at the event (and yes, there were a lot, even in the early years). Note: while unrated, this film does contain nudity; such content is artistically and tastefully incorporated as part of the whole story.

Juicy Danger Meets Burning Man (1998) 54:00
By David Vaisbord
The Juicy Danger Show is an underground circus act named for its power blend of bursting watermelons and flailing chainsaws. Vaisbord’s 1997 documentary sketches the juiciness of the performers’ bodies, the raw danger of their personas, and drags the audience with them—Tom Comet, a former Jim Rose Sideshow, and Christine Taylor, a Vancouver one-woman carnival—into the grinning anarchy of the Burning Man festival. A real-life love story at Burning Man – and who doesn’t love a love story? – that also captures the magic and spectacle of the event.

Confessions of a Burning Man (2006) 1:27
By Paul Barnett & Unsu Lee
Four first-timer participants reflect and share personal journeys of Burning Man as it dissolves barriers between races, nationalities and economic classes. These stories, captured from 2001-2002 help to create a beautiful film that inspires and entertains while offering insight and understanding about why people return year after year.

The Temple Builder (2006)
By Mike Wilson
Enter the world of David Best, the most celebrated artist ever to emerge from the 20 year-old creative maelstrom of counter culture that is Burning Man. Filmed over the course of five years, The Temple Builder paints a deeply intimate portrait of the man behind the myths; from his incredible art car and collage work, to the powerful spiritual centers he creates in the Black Rock Desert to his courageous work in San Rafael, CA for the benefit of day-laborers, Best's work powerfully impacts the people around him. This is the story of creation, evolution and of a man meeting his artistic destiny head on with the help of his amazing family, his all-volunteer crew, and the community which brings the projects to ultimate completion every year just before they are set ablaze and forever moved into the gallery of the heart and of legend. Directed by Irish filmmaker Dearbhla Glynn (Dust Devils), produced by Michael S. Wilson (BURNING MAN:Beyond Black Rock) and supported by The Irish Film Board. This film serves as a time capsule of an artist and his community at a crossroad and powerfully foreshadows the conflicts of an entire country. The film was produced in Ireland and the music is composed by Irish musicians.
Gifting It (2001) 1:14
By Renea Roberts
A reflective look at the unique handling of commerce (or lack thereof) that sets the Burning Man apart from other large participatory events. “Gifting” provides a foundation for social interaction, removing elements and boundaries between people and civic cooperation – in a way that can only be described as inspirational. An academic (but never dry) peek at one of the deepest philosophies of the Burning Man culture, this documentary delves into interviews with experts on Gift culture, and even offers a glimpse at the outgrowth of regional events, including Flipside.

Burning Man 1991 (1991) - 29:00
By Larry Harvey
Larry Harvey accounts the journey from Baker Beach to Black Rock - A dried lake bed encircled by a mountain range, sitting undisturbed for the last 30,000 years, and staging ground-zero for a soon-to-develop cultural movement. A glimpse of the earliest days of Burning Man including some of the first acts of gifting and creativity – watch the Man being raised by a rope tugged by 80 people and see the roots of a worldwide phenomenon take hold.

One Minute to Burn (2001) 21:00
By Paul Andresen & Mo Stoebe
This cinematic buffet of Burning Man highlights is comprised of 51 short videos, each capturing a moment of random creativity and spontaneity that make Burning Man so vibrant. This Festival Version contains 21 minutes of segments, each only around one minute long. Atmospheric and experimental, each segment is filmed and directed with a different technique.

The Pyromid (2002) - 18:00
By Brian Scully
The Pyromid recalls the transformation of an unassuming theme camp as it evolves into a chaotic and dangerous burn on the playa. Featuring video footage from Burning Man 2001-2002 which are accompanied by readings by Dick Dale and William S. Burroughs.

Black Rock Burning (2003) – 30:00
By Kim Barr & Aleece Germano
A poetic and personal journey into the sacred yet profane experience that is Burning Man. This Canadian documentary film is a richly visual experience that captures the phantasmagorical art, creative people and generosity of spirit that combine to create this temporary utopia. Art cars prowl the desert in the guise of fire breathing dragons, glittering fish, and Spanish galleons.

Sensation: A Journey to Burning Man (2003) - 45:00
By Laurent Le Gall
What started out as a five-minute report for French television expanded into a full length English-language documentary on Burning Man by first time attendee Laurent Le Gall. Roughly 20% of the 300 media outlets attending the event are international, coming from Europe, Canada and Asia. Whimsical and fun, with occasional interviews of French-speaking participants with English subtitles – an good example of how Burning Man is being portrayed overseas, covering the journalist's own adventure and interactions with participants.

Fall and Rise of the Fools Ark (2005) 46:00
By Dadara & Jesse Limmen
This chronicle of the building of the Fools' Ark art installation at Burning Man 2003 is intertwined into a part-animation, part-live action audio-visual journey through forgotten worlds to tell the tale behind the project. The result is a magical meeting of reality and fantasy that departs from the documentary format common in many films about Burning Man, and gives an insight into the depth of imagination that lies behind many Burning Man installations.

Airstreams in the Sun (2005) – 18:00
Burnstream Court is the quintessential "trailer park" for Airstream trailer aficionados. This film offers a philosophical comparison between Larry Harvey and Wally Byam (Airstream Founder) by suggesting that through vision and influence, each created community and inspired unique options in lifestyle. An unusual glimpse of a Burning Man subculture within a culture!

Back to the Burn (2005) – 16:00
By Sunny Minedew
Created by Reno-area artist Sunny Minedew, this short documentary offers a perfect capsule-glimpse of Burning Man for those who have never attended the desert event. Special attention is paid to the creation of the delightful Mutant Vehicles of Burning Man, and the Department of Mutant Vehicles that inspects and registers these mobile works of art.

Cheers !

Big Controlled Burn News!!

Controlled Burn Opens Artown 2007

Controlled Burn, Reno’s homegrown cutting-edge fire spinning performance group, will open Artown 2007 on the Mapes Plaza on Sunday, July 1, 2007. The public is invited to this free performance and is welcomed to experience Controlled Burn. The Mapes Plaza is located on the Truckee River at South Virginia Street, downtown Reno.

“We have some incredible new choreography in the works. No one will leave disappointed,” says Chelsea Chen, show director. “This is such an awesome honor for us to be chosen to open this year’s art festival.”

Chen shares that many different types of fire and other entertainment are slated for the one hour show. “On the schedule, all four fire breathing towers will be there along with aerialists, stilt performers and other dancers. Since Controlled Burn has doubled in size over the past year, there will be more performers showcasing their talents with poi, staff, fire fans and fingers. There will be a few surprises too. Don’t want to give it all away!”

There will be no shortage of Controlled Burn in the month of July. Leilani Macedo, Business Director, says, “The City of Reno and Artown contacted me several months ago to schedule several performances during Artown. Not only will Controlled Burn open Artown, but we will be on the Mapes Plaza on several Sundays in July and August. Plus we’ll close the Drum, Dance & Didgeridoo Festival on Saturday, July 28 at Wingfield Park. It’s the best time of the year to catch a Controlled Burn performance. That’s a total of five major performances within a month.”

“No one can get too much of Controlled Burn. They are the best out there, bar none,” smiles avid fan Tom Wiltzius. “I’ve been watching Controlled Burn grow since they started gathering at a park seven years ago. They just keep pushing themselves with bigger fire, bigger tools and bigger choreography. I’ll never stop being amazed.”

Photos, video clips and biographies of Controlled Burn can be found on their Web site at: www.controlledburnreno.com along with a complete schedule for the summer season.

Controlled Burn, Inc. is a pending non-profit 501c3 organization. Founded in 2000, Controlled Burn offers poi spinning classes weekly on Wednesdays at 6 PM to 7 PM at Horseman's Park, off Skyline Blvd, Reno.

I don't know if any of you are fans, but we're getting a Whole Foods in Reno! It'll be at S. Virginia & Del Monte. I'm very excited! I hate Wild Oats! It tries and fails to be Whole Foods. Okay, so I'm a dyed in the wool Californian tranplant, but I can't help it. I LOVE Whole Foods! YAY!!
